The Annapurna Base Camp Trek takes you from villages and farmland into rhododendron forests and the Modi Khola Valley before reaching Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m.
I started working in the Himalayas as a porter in 1996 and received my government trekking guide license in 2002. Since then, I have guided hundreds of trekkers on routes throughout Nepal, including the Annapurna Base Camp route.
Do not judge this trek only by its highest altitude. The total elevation gain and loss makes some days demanding, especially around Chhomrong, where the trail has long sections of stone steps.
From Jhinu Danda to Lower Sinuwa, you may meet donkeys carrying supplies between villages. They do not go farther up the trail. Give them space, move to the inside of the path, and wait until they have passed.
There are two main suspension bridges on the route, and because we return by the same trail, we cross both twice. The Jhinu Danda bridge is about 287 m long. Take your time when crossing and do not rush if other people are on the bridge.
You may also encounter stinging nettles on the lower trail. During the monsoon, leeches are common in the wet forest sections.
From Deurali onward, some sections require extra care because of avalanche risk. Your guide will tell you where to walk and where not to stop. Do not stop in an exposed area for photographs. Before taking a photo, check behind you and make sure you are standing on stable ground.
Most days take around 5 to 7 hours. I prefer to keep a steady pace rather than push hard early in the day and arrive tired at the next lodge.
There is no technical climbing on the standard Annapurna Base Camp route. You do not need ropes, crampons, or mountaineering experience, but you should be prepared for repeated climbs and descents and colder conditions at higher elevations.

For me, the main reason to choose this trek is the way the landscape changes within a relatively short journey. You start among farmland and villages, walk through rhododendron and bamboo forests, and gradually enter the narrow upper valley of the Modi Khola.
You gradually leave the lower villages behind and move deeper into the Himalayas, with the trail becoming more remote as you climb.
Staying in local teahouses and eating meals along the route gives you a chance to experience how trekkers and local communities live in the mountain villages.
The route has a simple direction. You keep moving higher through the Modi Khola Valley until you reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m.
The upper part of the route puts you inside the mountain valley rather than viewing the peaks from far away. You walk between the high walls of the Annapurna Sanctuary before reaching the base camp.
Choosing a company for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is not only about comparing prices. You are choosing who will arrange your trek, who will be with you on the trail, and how they will handle things when something goes wrong. I started working in the mountains as a porter in 1996, received my government trekking guide license in 2002, and founded Mountain World Treks in 2010. My experience as a porter, guide, and company owner still influences how we run our treks.

Our guides know the Annapurna Base Camp trail, including the villages, teahouses, stone steps, bridges, and higher sections around Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp.
We arrange permits, transportation, teahouses, meals, guides, and porters. We also explain the daily route and what you need to carry before you start walking.
We normally keep groups maximum 12 trekkers. This makes it easier for the guide to follow the group's pace and respond when someone needs more time.
Mountain treks do not always go exactly as planned. Weather, trail conditions, or a trekker feeling unwell can require changes, and our guides know how to respond.
If you have questions about the route, walking days, accommodation, food, or what is included, you can speak with us before booking and get clear answers.
Saligram started as a porter in 1996, so he knows the physical work involved in carrying loads on mountain trails and the conditions porters face during a trek.
Yes, this trek is right for you if you want a shorter Himalayan trek that reaches 4,130 m without technical climbing or requiring a long holiday. The route combines village trails, farmland, forests, and high mountain terrain, allowing you to experience all of these in one trip. It is also a good choice if you want to experience the Annapurna Sanctuary without committing to a longer circuit trek.
Reach Annapurna Base Camp in the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, with high peaks surrounding the base camp.
If the weather is clear, watch the first sunlight reach Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna South.
Walk through Gurung villages, see traditional houses and terraced fields, and experience local life along the lower trail.
Walk from farmland and villages through bamboo and rhododendron forests, river valleys, and the open terrain above Deurali.
Cross suspension bridges over the Modi Khola and other mountain streams as you move between the villages and higher sections of the route.
From the upper valley, see Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, and Gangapurna from close range.

Moderate. The route reaches 4,130 m and includes long stone staircases, steep sections, rocky trails, and frequent elevation changes. The highest part comes near the end of the trek, when the effects of altitude and cold are more noticeable.
No technical climbing skills are required. See our Annapurna Base Camp Trek Difficulty Guide for more detail.
Start training several weeks before departure, with an emphasis on endurance and leg strength. Increase the duration of your sessions gradually rather than starting with long workouts.

The best time to trek to Annapurna Base Camp is March to May and September to November. These months normally have clearer skies and less rain, making the trail easier to walk. The days are mild at lower elevations, while mornings and nights get colder as you climb higher. Our Best Time to Trek to Annapurna Base Camp guide breaks down the weather and conditions month by month.
Mild days, clear mountain views, and rhododendrons in bloom make spring a popular time for the trek.
Rain, clouds, and slippery trails are the main issues. Landslides and leeches can also occur on some lower sections.
Stable weather, dry trails, and clear mountain views make autumn the most popular trekking season.
Cold mornings and nights, with a higher chance of snowfall, but the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is still possible.
Explore our detailed Annapurna Base Camp Trek guides for practical information to help you plan each part of your trek. Learn about training, weather by month, permits, travel insurance, visa requirements, transportation, trail facilities, extra costs, and tipping your guide and porters. Altitude sickness can occur above 2,500 m as your body adjusts to lower oxygen levels. On the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, the highest point is 4,130 m. Headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness, poor appetite, and disturbed sleep are common symptoms. Keep a steady pace, drink enough water, and tell your guide about any symptoms. Do not ascend further if symptoms are getting worse.
In an emergency: Your guide can arrange descent, evacuation, and medical treatment. Our team can also coordinate transport to Kathmandu and help you reach a hospital or clinic.
For symptoms, prevention, and altitude management, see our Annapurna Base Camp Trek Altitude Sickness Guide.
Beyond booking your flights and packing your gear, three things are worth sorting out early: checking the weather for your trekking dates, choosing insurance that covers emergencies during the trek, and knowing how to get your Nepal visa before you arrive.
