Nar Phu Valley Trek Overview

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a 12-day adventure in Nepal that includes 8 days of trekking through one of the country’s most remote Himalayan valleys. The route leaves the Annapurna Circuit at Koto, follows the Nar Khola through the traditional villages of Meta, Phu, and Nar, and crosses Kang La Pass (5,322 m) before rejoining the Annapurna Circuit near Ngawal.

People often ask me how the Nar Phu Valley Trek compares with the Annapurna Circuit. My answer is usually the same. If you’re looking for quieter trails, traditional Tibetan villages, and fewer trekkers, Nar Phu offers a completely different experience. The pace is slower, the villages are smaller, and local traditions remain an important part of everyday life.

The trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Koto via Besisahar. From Koto, the trail leaves the main Annapurna route and follows the Nar Khola through forests, narrow gorges, suspension bridges, and rocky canyons before climbing into the high valleys of Meta, Phu, and Nar.

As you gain altitude, the landscape changes with it. Forests gradually give way to dry alpine valleys, while traditional stone houses, mani walls, prayer flags, chortens, and centuries-old monasteries reflect the region’s strong Tibetan Buddhist culture. Throughout the trek, you’ll have views of Himlung Himal, Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and several other Himalayan peaks.

For many trekkers, the villages become the highlight of the journey. Phu and Nar are among the oldest settlements in the region, where traditional stone houses, Buddhist monasteries, and a mountain lifestyle have been preserved for generations. Spending time in these villages is just as rewarding as crossing Kang La Pass.

The trek passes through a restricted area of Nepal, so you’ll need a Nar Phu Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). A licensed trekking guide is also required. We arrange all permits and paperwork before your trek, so everything is ready before you begin.

Many people also ask whether the trek is difficult. The challenge comes from the combination of altitude, longer walking days, and the remote nature of the valley rather than technical climbing. Our itinerary includes an acclimatization day in Phu Village, giving your body time to adjust before crossing Kang La Pass (5,322 m).

Accommodation throughout the trek is in simple mountain teahouses. Compared with the Annapurna Circuit, facilities are more basic, food choices are more limited, and services such as Wi-Fi, charging, and hot showers may not always be available. These are normal conditions in a remote Himalayan valley and part of the experience.

Most days involve 5 to 7 hours of walking, although the day you cross Kang La Pass is usually longer. In my experience, the people who enjoy this trek the most aren’t the ones who walk the fastest. They’re the ones who slow down, spend time in the villages, and appreciate the culture, landscapes, and quiet trails that make the Nar Phu Valley different from anywhere else in Nepal.

A Personal Note from Saligram:

When I plan the Nar Phu Valley Trek, I don’t focus only on crossing Kang La Pass. I look at the walking pace, the altitude gain, and making sure there’s enough time to experience the villages of Nar and Phu instead of simply passing through them. This is one of the few trekking regions in Nepal where the culture is just as memorable as the mountains. My goal is for you to leave with more than photos of the Himalayas. I want you to understand the people, traditions, and way of life that make Nar Phu different from anywhere else in Nepal.

Kang La reaches 5,240m, and the route into Nar and Phu is quieter and less developed than the main Annapurna Circuit. These guides cover the practical details to check before the trek, including permits, weather, insurance, the high pass, costs, and travelling solo.

How do I train for the Nar Phu Valley Trek?

Plan on 5–7 hours of walking on most days, with longer and harder sections around the Kang La crossing. The trail includes steep climbs, loose rock, and long descents, so regular hiking and leg training are important. Start 8–10 weeks before the trek with hill walks, stairs, longer hikes, and strength exercises. By the time you start, you should already be comfortable with sustained uphill walking.

My legs are officially done 😅 but Nar Phu was worth it.

The first few days of Nar Phu Trek felt normal enough and then the landscape started changing completely. Suddenly there were massive rock walls, dry hills and almost no trees. I kept stopping to take photos and then realizing everyone else had already walked ahead. The Kang La day was the toughest for me. The climb felt endless and the wind at the top was no joke. But standing there looking across the mountains was one of those moments where you just stay quiet for a while. Really glad I chose this route instead of doing only the more popular trails.

Amazing Nar Phu

Nar Phu was different from what I expected, but in a good way. I thought I would remember the mountains most, but the small , beautiful villages stayed with me more. Some parts of the trail was quiet, with almost no people around, and some sections were rocky. The night in Nar was really cold, but waking up to the mountains outside made it worth it. This trek is not for someone looking for easy trails and comfortable hotels every night. For me, that was part of the fun. My guide Sudip was great and he took care of me really well. He was also extremely knowledgeable. thanks to mountain world treks and my guide for making this trip a huge success.

Nar Phu

Just got back from Nar Phu and I’m still thinking about that trail between the cliffs. The valley gets quieter and quieter as you go in. Phu village was probably my favorite part. The old stone houses, narrow paths, prayer flags, and those huge mountains sitting right behind everything felt completely different from the usual trekking routes. Some days were hard, especially when the trail went higher and my legs were already tired, but I never felt rushed. Our guide, Bipin was good at knowing when we needed a break without making a big deal about it. Coming back to lower altitude felt strange after spending days up there.
